Inception

Tata Sponge Iron Limited (TSIL) was incorporated in 1982 as a joint venture of Tata Steel and the Industrial Promotion & Investment Corporation of Orissa Limited (IPICOL). It was set up for the production of sponge iron based on the TISCO Direct Reduction (TDR) technology, which was developed in-house at Tata Steel. Later during 1991, Tata Steel acquired IPICOLs stake and at present TSIL is a sister company of Tata Steel.

Growth

The plant was initially designed for a production capacity of 90,000 TPA, which was enhanced to 1,20,000 TPA through various modifications during 1990-91. Later, to cater to the growing demand of quality sponge iron, TSIL increased its capacity by adding a second kiln of equivalent capacity in 1998-99. A third kiln of 150,000 TPA capacity was added in 2005-06.

In December, 2001 TSIL commissioned a 7.5 MW captive power plant to produce electricity from the waste heat of exit gases of its Kiln No.2. This has helped the company to become self sufficient in power. A second power plant of 18.5 MW fed by the waste heat generated by Kiln No. 3 was commisioned in November, 2006. It has the potential to sell its surplus power, which is currently pending government approval.

Quality

ISO-9002 certified companyTSIL was the first Indian sponge iron company to receive ISO-9002 certification. The company has also won several prestigious national awards in product quality, as well as national & state awards in safety.
