Environment Management

TSIL, a ISO-14001 certified company, has always provided a top priority on the management of environmental pollution. The pollution standards are maintained well below the stipulated standards set by the Central & State Pollution Control Boards.
A full fledged pollution control department operates to monitor the regular compliance of pollution control norms, to take regular readings at key points in the plant, ensure effective & efficient operation of different pollution control equipment and liaise with the government authorities on various environmental issues. The department has been equipped with modern pollution monitoring equipment viz. high volume samples, stack monitoring kit, sound level meter, etc.
In recognition of TSIL's environmental initiatives, the company is the first in the DRI sector to receive the following awards:
Some of the initiatives taken by the company in addressing the pollution control are as below:
Pollution Control Equipment
Plant-I: (commissioned in 1985)
Installation & continuous operation of
- Gas cleaning system: To clean the process gas of Plant-I
- Three dedusting systems: To arrest the flying of fugitive dust during plant operation.
Total Investment: Over Rs.2.5 crore
Plant-II: (commissioned in 1998)
Installation & continuous operation of
- Electro Static Precipitator (ESP) : To clean the process gas of plant-II
- Two dedusting systems : To arrest the flying of fugitive dust during plant operation.
Total Investment : Over Rs. 6.5 crore
The company has also commissioned a pollution control system in its raw material preparation plant known as “Dust Suppression System” at a cost of about Rs. 15.0 lakh.
Besides the above, the company has hired the services of a mobile vacuum cleaning van which operates for 24 hours every day to clean the flying dust settling inside the plant roads, thus keeping the roads free from dust. Total hiring charges for the engagement of this van : Rs. 60 lakh per year.
Annual expenditure in the operation and maintenance of these equipment and other measures taken for pollution control in the Works: approximately Rs. 2 crore
Waste Handling System
(i) Six huge sludge ponds have been dug inside the plant premises which collect the unclean process water and allow the contaminants to settle down in these ponds. The water is then pumped out, cleaned and reused in the process. These ponds ensure that the contaminated water is never allowed to flow in to the nearby natural stream.
(ii) Clear water sump ensures continuous cleaning of the contaminated water for its reuse for the operation.
(iii) Unloading sprout helps in avoiding the dust nuisance during the unloading of coal char from the bunker.
(iv) A large waste dumping yard has been developed in an area at a safe distance between the plant and the township where the waste products generated during the process of sponge iron production is disposed. To avoid its flying, a thick layer of sweet soil is spread over the heaps and grass is planted to make the area clean and green.
(v) Concrete flooring has been done at such areas inside the plant where the dust normally settles in some amount. Continuous water spraying is done to clean these floors and allow the dust to flow to the nearby drains from where the dusts are collected and disposed in waste yards.
Tree Plantation
When TSIL took over the land from its original owners, a major portion of it was barren while some area was being used for agriculture. TSIL began planting trees on a yearly basis and since then, has planted over 1,45,000 trees, most of which have grown up and turned these tracts into mini forests.
