CII Awards for TQM & SHE

Mr. Pandit, MD, receiving the CII TQM Award

Success in the modern business world depends greatly on the right approach to manage a business, in order to deal with tough competition and new technological challenges, upgrade the quality of product and services in line with the changing business needs. One promising approach in tuning a company in this direction is by adopting Total Quality Management – a philosophy and set of guiding principles which represent the quest to continually improve process and product through application of quality principles for the benefit of all stakeholders and recognize the fact that no system is ever perfect, and that all systems, unless improved, will degrade with time and use.

Receiving the Safety, Health and Environment Award

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a non-government, industry led and industry managed organisation, has been organising a series of competitions to promote the culture of TQM. Besides Total Quality, it also has in its hoards of awards a separate recognition instituted to honour excellence in safety, health, and environmental (SHE) initiatives, with an objective to emphasize that exemplary SHE performance is a prerequisite for operational excellence and that excelling in these areas is indispensable to achieve long-term financial success. The award is based on overall achievement across a wide range of SHE areas including occupational safety and health and the prevention of accidents, work ambience, clean and green surroundings and in the process, going beyond the regulatory standards.

There seems to be a deluge of awards at Tata Sponge. After recently winning the Outlook Money Award for creating shareholder value, the company has now been honoured with two more awards in the recently held award competition organised by the CII (Eastern Region) – in the fields of Total Quality Management and Safety, Health & Environment. The awards were presented by Mr. B. Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel in a formal function held at Kolkata on 26th April ’05.
