After having won the Gold Greentech Award for environmental excellence for the year 2003-04, Tata Sponge Iron Limited (Tata Sponge) has bagged another first in the DRI sector by winning the coveted first prize in the TERI Corporate Environmental Awards. These awards have been instituted by The Energy & Resources Institute, a non-profit NGO established to promote industrial environment management worldwide, besides taking up various issues and interests of public concern.

Considered one of the most prestigious awards by corporate houses, the objective of the TERI Environment Awards is to encourage clean and green operations for improvements to world class environmental management standards. This is accomplished by recognizing such industrial units which exhibit outstanding performance in protection of the ecology on the basis of their factory operations and its impact on the surroundings during a financial year as responsible corporate bodies in the country.

Mr. D. K. Mohanty, Sr Divisional Manager (PS & Environment) received the award on behalf of the company from Mr. Namo Narain Meena, Hon’ble Minister of State (Environment & Forests), Government of India during the awards ceremony held at New Delhi on 5th June, 2004, the World Environment Day.

The MD, Tata Sponge, Mr. Ashok Pandit commented that this award was a fitting recognition of the conscientious efforts put in by our company to maintain a clean and green environment and that this would greatly help in projecting Tata Sponge’s image as an eco friendly organization, despite operating in the coal based sponge sector, which has otherwise been stigmatised as being notoriously polluting.
